Education Classes
 

Prenatal Classes help parents-to-be anticipate situations that may arise during pregnancy and labor. Classes offer information on what to expect during labor, relaxation techniques, analgesia/anesthesia, newborn care and a tour of the Family Birth Center. The classes consist of five, two-hour sessions and are held on consecutive Wednesdays or Thursdays at 7 p.m. Classes should be attended between the 26th and 34th week of pregnancy. To register, call 931-502-1180. Classes are located in the Liberty Classrooms unless otherwise announced. Class fee for five-week series is $50; individual classes are $15.

Sibling Classes offer brothers-and sisters-to-be an introduction to sibling interaction and a tour of the Nursery. Last Saturday of the month, 3rd Floor Classroom, 10 a.m. To register, call 931-502-1180.

Family Birth Center Lactation Services offers a Breastfeeding class for new moms. The class is held the first Tuesday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. in the 3rd Floor Classroom of Gateway Medical Center. Cost for the class is $15 ($25 if you which to receive The Nursing Mother's Companion book). To register, call 931-502-1180.

Gateway's Diabetes Education Program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association and offers individual attention in a group setting regarding medications, exercise, blood glucose testing, prevention, and nutrition. Seventy percent of patients who attended the class last year lost 10 pounds on average, 84% saw an improvement in their blood glucose levels, and 77% said they felt they could better manage their disease after attending the class. Smoking Cessation. The Tennessee Department of Health offers a statewide telephone-based tobacco cessation program. Individuals now can call the Tennessee tobacco quitline at 800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669) to receive personalized support to aid in quitting cigarette, spit or chew tobacco. The Tennessee tobacco quitline is a toll-free service. Callers will be connected with a trained coach who will guide them through the quitting process, as well as ongoing professional coaching via individually scheduled calls from a counselor personally assigned to them. It is a free, confidential service, and available to Tennessee residents in both English and Spanish. Callers also will have complimentary access to relapse prevention techniques, resource materials, information on nicotine replacement therapies and other services to aid in the quitting process.
